LRG & Closed Sessions present: Freddie Gibbs

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Last month LRG (Lifted Research Group) announced its pairing with Chicago based media source RubyHornet.com and record label Closed Sessions on a new edition of the Closed Session series. The new sessions feature artists that match the aesthetics and style of both brands, while adding something original and authentic to the lifestyle culture of music, art, and fashion. The new collaborative series kicked off with Hip Hop artist Outasight, who created the song "Turn It Up". Today LRG and RubyHornet unveil the second installment in their Closed Sessions series, which features none other than rising star Freddie Gibbs. The Closed Session resulted in the new track "Something New" featuring YP, as well as this video documentary detailing the session and Freddie's time in the Windy City.

Gary, Indiana's Freddie Gibbs has taken the musical world by storm. In 2008 he was in label limbo after being released from a recording contract with Interscope records. Gibbs grabbed independence by the horns and released several critically acclaimed mixtapes DIY style. Fans and critics took note and Gibbs was pegged by countless blogs, magazines and LRG as an artist to watch in 2010.

The buzz climaxed with the release of his debut EP, Str8 Killa, which was released August 3rd via Decon Records. Just a few weeks prior to the release of the EP, Gibbs hit the Windy City as a headliner of this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival. Closing down the Balance Stage, Gibbs performed in front of 30,000 people as he brought the gritty streets of Gary, Indiana to Chicago’s Union Park.

Prior to his performance at Pitchfork, Freddie Gibbs hit SoundScape Studios for a Closed Session with RubyHornet and LRG. Gibbs also reached out to Chicago's YP, who is currently bubbling in Chicago's underground Hip Hop scene. The two worked together to create "Something New" featuring the smooth production of Million $ Mano, another rising talent from the Windy City.

"Everyday I receive emails, texts, and phone calls proclaiming the "next big thing". It makes me wonder what really separates an artist from the pack. Our Closed Session with LRG and Freddie Gibbs left no doubt in my mind that Gibbs is a special talent," said Alexander Fruchter/DJ RTC, Co-Founder of RubyHornet.com and President of Closed Sessions.

The documentary video shows fans exactly what happened during the Closed Session with Freddie Gibbs, and also provides insight into one of Hip Hop's rising stars and can be seen now at ClosedSessions.com/LRG, RubyHornet.com and L-R-G.com.

The new song, "Something New" featuring YP will be available for free download starting August 25th at ClosedS... Read More

Closed Sessions: Freddie Gibbs

Friday, August 20, 2010

Freddie Gibbs has taken the musical world by storm. In 2008 he was in label limbo after being released from a recording contract with Interscope records. The Gary, Indiana native took things into his own hands and independently released several critically acclaimed mixtapes. Pitchfork Magazine crowned him one of music's top up and comers, no small feat considering that Pitchfork is a mostly indie-rock outlet. Gibbs followed his Pitchfork feature with write-ups in the L.A. Times, New York Post, countless tastemaker blogs and inclusion in XXL’s Freshmen Class of 2010.

In July of 2010 Freddie Gibbs hit the Windy City as a headliner at this year’s edition of the Pitchfork Music Festival. Closing down the Balance Stage, Gibbs performed in front of 30,000 people as he brought the gritty streets of Gary, Indiana to Chicago’s Union Park. Before his Pitchfork performance, Freddie Gibbs hosted RubyHornet’s monthly Digital Freshness party at Beauty Bar and hit SoundScape Studio for the second edition of the LRG x Closed Sessions collaborative project. Freddie Gibbs decided to work with up and comer YP and after a few beats and blunts, “Something New” was born; featuring the smooth production of Chicago Million $ Mano. Watch the documentary to see exactly how things went down and get to know one of the music world’s most promising stars.

We've put together a trailer to preview this collaboration. The full Freddie Gibbs documentary and song will be available for download next week.
